Doing Business in Sweden

Sweden is one of the countries whose economy is depending on business trades. The new Swedish government elected in September 2006 demonstrated the trade oriented specific of the country by reducing taxes, as one of their first reform. The U.S. ranks 8th place as an exporter on the Swedish market.

Sweden is always interested in purchasing American products because of the lower value of the dollar. The main areas for U.S. exporters here are: energy, consumer products and auto parts. There is a Swedish-American trade concerning alternative energy.

Both countries are trying to find solutions for the global warming phenomena, leading to developing technological instruments that can reduce this problem. The issue that appears when considering doing business in Sweden is high prices. The good thing is that an U.S. exporter can raise the prices.

Also, Sweden has often been described as “the most Americanized of countries”, due to the high number of American citizens that live there. This can only be a plus because Swedish people will certainly be receptive to U.S. products.

There are two leading sectors for U.S. exporters and investors in Sweden, the agricultural and commercial one. The commercial sector includes: medical equipment, power generation systems, computer software, drugs and pharmaceutical, safety and security, automotive parts and accessories, telecommunication equipment and services, and, of course, environmental technologies.

The power generation systems market offers great opportunities for U.S. exporters, due to the fact that it’s the main focus of Sweden. For instance, American companies can export power grid hardware, in order to help modify the current Swedish grid infrastructure.
U.S. exporters dominate the computer software market in Sweden.

For instance, in 2007, imports from U.S. reached an estimated $1,684 billion from the total imports of $2,181 billion. This means 75-80% of the Swedish imports in this sector came from the U.S. Moreover, this market is constantly growing and sales are expected to increase.

Exporting U.S. products to Sweden is a simple process as trade barriers no longer exist and taxes have been reduced. The Swedish market offers a lot of great opportunities for U.S. exporters in every sector, but the recommendation is to focus on the environmental one.
